Frequently Asked Questions

How do I go about ordering a roof rack?

A telephone call is all it takes; your order and payment details can be taken over the phone and arrangements for fitting are made. Alternatively if you are unable to take advantage of the free fitting service at SDV’s premises, carriage will be quoted and arranged.

How soon can I have a roof rack?

For stock racks (100’s are kept in stock) fitting can be arranged at our premises on the day of order in most cases. If a stock rack has to be sent by carrier delivery is normally within 10 days, and for the smaller racks can be as soon as next working day for orders placed before 12 noon. For racks made to order, allow from seven to twenty one days for manufacture, galvanising and delivery.

Will the roof rack take an 8’ x 4’ (2440 x 1220) sheet?

The minimum width of our ‘builders’ type roof racks is 49” (1245mm) and is as long as feasible on your vehicle. Please ask for dimensions if you require an alternative type of rack.

What are the advantages of galvanising?

The zinc coating bonds to the metal creating an exceptionally long lasting finish. The three intermetallic layers that form during the galvanizing process are all harder than the substrate steel and have excellent abrasion resistance. The thicknesses (weights) of coatings formed are regular, predictable and simply specified. Galvanizing is one of the few coatings which is completely defined by a British Standard (BS EN ISO 1461).

What is the difference between hot-dip galvanizing and zinc-plating?

Hot-dip galvanising generally has 10 times more zinc on the surface and is suitable for use in all exterior and interior applications.

What vehicles do you make racks for?

We manufacture roof racks for vans, many 4 wheel drive vehicles and some estate cars/vans.

Do you make a roof rack for my vehicle?

See the list of the most popular vehicles we manufacture for here.

Please do not hesitate to ring us if you cannot see your vehicle listed.

What is your basic side rack?

Our side rack/glass rack is based on the traditional side frails used to carry glass/frames/doors etc. We do not encumber the frame with fixing mechanisms, allowing for versatility in its use. The rubber fender strips and buffers are a quality rubber allowing glass/upvc/wood etc to be strapped tightly to the wall of the rack.

Do you make different sizes of luggage rack?

We can make a luggage rack for most of the vehicles in our range. This can be any type either rail round only or rail round with mesh base or lining to form a basket rack. These roof racks are often fitted to mini buses for schools/colleges/outward bound groups/youth groups/outdoor pursuit centres etc. or 4 wheel drive vehicles for safari/expedition purposes.

Do you still make dealers roof racks?

Yes we still make roof racks for antique dealers/furniture sales. There are a limited number of cars / estates for which we can make a roof rack, but wherever possible we will endeavor to satisfy your requirements.

Is there any drilling required?

All our roof racks are fitted without the need for drilling with the exception of the following vans – VW T4 Transporter, Ford Courier, Renault (Master Maxi only) and the early Vauxhall Combo.

Are the racks fully welded?

Yes, we only manufacture welded roof racks that are made of a very substantial gauge of steel to ensure safe carrying of your load.
